Probiotic for immune boost

80% of the body’s immune cells are located in the gastrointestinal system. Studies revealed that Lactobacillus paracasei subspecies paracasei CRL431 induced an immunologic response that provided enhanced systemic protection of cells from virus infections by increasing the production of virus neutralizing antibodies significantly. It is equally effective against bacterial and fungal infections. ResitonTM contains Lactobacillus paracasei subspecies paracasei, clinically proven probiotic strain that colonizes in the intestine and strengthens the natural defense of the body, and stimulates the immune system. ResitonTM is a dietary supplement containing potentially beneficial bacteria. In order to provide health benefits ResitonTM has been developed in accordance with the WHO guidelines.

Clinical Studies
Some strains of orally ingested probiotic bacteria may modulate the immune response and increase antibody titers against enteric infections by bacteria or viruses. Even positive effects of probiotics on respiratory tract infections have been reported. A study was conducted with an aim to investigate whether and how probiotics affect the immune response to a standardized enterovirus challenge (polio) and infections not limited to the gastrointestinal tract in healthy adults. With this aim a method was designed. In a randomized, controlled and double-blind study 64 volunteers consumed for 5 weeks chemically acidified clotted milk without bacteria or with Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG or Lactobacillus paracasei CRL431 added. In the second week subjects were vaccinated orally against polio 1, 2 and 3. Polio virus neutralizing serum activity, the primary parameter was determined by the standard neutralization test (WHO) before and three times after vaccination. Polio-specific IgA, IgG and IgM were detected by ELISAs. The result was very encouraging. Probiotics increased poliovirus neutralizing antibody titers (NT) and affected the formation of poliovirus-specific IgA and IgG in serum. The maximum increase after immunization was about 2, 2.2, or 4-fold higher, respectively, for NT, IgG or, IgA, in volunteers consuming probiotics instead of placebo. It was concluded that probiotics induce an immunologic response that may provide enhanced systemic protection of cells from virus infections by increasing production of virus neutralizing antibodies. This study was conducted in Kiel , Germany in 2004.

A new clinical study published on line on September 7, 2011 in the acknowledged British Journal of Nutrition documents that Lactobacillus paracasei ssp . paracasei CRL431 or Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis is an effective means to support the immune system. This study investigated the ability of these strains to modulate the immune syetem using a vaccination model in healthy subjects. A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study was conducted in 211 subjects. Subjects consumed a minimum of 1 billion colony-forming units of either strain or matching placebo once daily for 6 weeks. After 2 weeks, influenza vaccination was given. Plasma and saliva samples were collected at baseline and after 6 weeks for the analysis of antibodies, cytokines and innate immune parameters. Changes from baseline in vaccine-specific plasma IgG, IgG1 and IgG3 were significantly greater in both groups v. the corresponding placebo group. The number of subjects obtaining a substantial increase in specific IgG was significantly greater in both groups v. placebo. Significantly greater mean fold increases for vaccine-specific secretory IgA in saliva were observed in both probiotic groups. Similar results were observed for total antibody concentrations. No differences were found for plasma cytokines or innate immune parameters. The key finding of the study indicate that daily consumption of at least one billion colony forming units of Lactobacillus paracasei ssp . paracasei CRL431 or Bifidobacterium animalis ssp. lactis may strengthen the immune system’s defense against common infections such as flu and colds. This study was conducted in Milano , Italy .

Dosage and administration
The usual recommended dosage of ResitonTM for children and adults is 1-2 sachets a day. Consuming ResitonTM everyday for a long term helps maintain balanced intestinal flora and thus ensures good health. If required up to 8 sachets of ResitonTM can be recommended. If recommended with an anti-biotic, ResitonTM should be taken 2-3 hours before or after the anti-biotic administration. The contents of each sachet can be taken directly into the mouth or mixed with some normal water, beverage or semi liquid food.

Drug Interaction
